"If loyalty is not absolute, then it is nothing." (Jonas, Masterpiece Classic, Paradise. Season 1, Episode 4)
The character Jonas was referring to his loyalty to his boss. Some people thought he went too far with his methods to serve and protect his boss and his bosses interests. But Jonas felt that if he said he was going to be loyal he was going to give it 100% or he might as well not do it at all. What he was saying is if you are not 100% loyal - in every aspect - then in essence, you really can't really profess to be loyal to something at all.
To whom or what are you loyal?
Are you loyal to your spouse, your children, your family?
Are you loyal to your friends?
How about your job, boss, co-workers?
Do you find that you are loyal to your social club, fraternity, sorority?
Loyal to your church, the pastor, the vision?
On a scale of one to ten, how loyal are you to these things? If you can't place an absolute 10 next to any of them then maybe you can't say you are loyal at all.
Truthfully, we can't always find ourselves being loyal to everyone or everything because quite honestly, these things can interrupt our belief system and then we are forced to take stock and figure out what really matters to us. For Jonas, in Paradise, he was willing to justify murder for the sake of loyalty. I am sure many of us are not willing to go that far to prove we are loyal to someone or something.
There is only one person I know I can be loyal to with absolute truth and free from guilt or any chance of wrong doing. I won't be led astray. I won't be disappointed. I won't be let down.
Out of all of my relationships, out of all of my endeavors the one I really strive to be loyal to is Jesus. I know I am still need work in this area, we all do. I am still disobedient at times, I still doubt. I don't trust enough. I don't share His love like I should. I still misrepresent Him at times - and I plain ol' just don't act like Him as I should.
My loyalty is lacking.
I thank my God though, that His loyalty to me is not predicated on my loyalty to Him!
I would be truly miserable if it did.
This knowledge should and does propel me to be 100% loyal to Him. To put aside my own wants and pursue His. To do away with my will and submit to His will. To stop trying to establish my own sphere of influence and instead focus on building His kingdom. To tear down any idols I might have erected in my life and make sure Jesus is the only God of gods and Lord of lords that I look to and worship.
Because of how God has treated us - cared and loved us, loyalty to Him should be easy and absolute. We should, emphatically and without hesitation, say "Yes!" to everything concerning Him ... including death.
But we don't and quite frankly, we should be ashamed - repentant.
Will you stand with me and declare your 100% loyalty to Him today? Will you make no more excuses for your - our - disregard of being devoted to Him and Him alone? Will you be absolute in your resolution to stick with Him regardless of your current circumstances?
Let's do more than give lip service to how much we are Christ followers, stand firm and let our actions declare, "My loyalty to God is absolute, because otherwise, it would amount to nothing!"
