Soo...onward with the D.I.Y. projects! Now, although I'm not a prissy girl, I've never really undertaken a project like I did this weekend. I look at all the D.I.Y. shows and think to myself how cool it is to be able to do such things - but I've never ACTUALLY had the courage to tackle any on own. I decided after I had already started, to blog about it, so some pics I'm going to share you will only see the work in progress or after I completed it.
After a friend told me I should re-purpose some furniture, I decided to paint an old CD/DVD storage unit white and use in the playroom as a room divider.
I also learned sanding before you paint is a must! I learned that lesson while trying to paint the cork-board frame. I didn't sand very well in some sections and had to triple/quadruple paint for the it to "stick" like it should to the frame. Thankfully that was my first project! That lesson came in handy for the CD/DVD storage unit.
Incidentally, I got the paint from my sister who had some left over from her kitchen. Yes, the "wasp" sister. While I was there one flew in her path. She went into contorting fits. I told her she needed to just have a swarm of wasps around her if she wanted a good workout. Really, you've never seen such a thing in your life. Sigh ... Poor Michelle Obama.
Don't attempt to spray paint on a very windy day. Self explanatory. 'Nuff said.
Finally, if you can, test paint on a part of the surface that won't be seen. Because of this, I saved myself a lot of heart ache. I was going to spray paint The CD/DVD unit but soon discovered that the spray paint did not adhere to it as well as I would have liked. I was glad my dad had some paint lying around so I didn't have to buy any! It was the most challenging piece. It had a bigger surface area than I calculated, and more intricate work had to be done. Twice I thought I was complete only to discover another area I hadn't gotten to!
As a result, I didn't completely finish it - but that's okay because people will not see the inside of it. If I feel like it, I'll tackle that part another day. All in all it wasn't a bad experience and I'm actually looking forward to doing more projects in the future.
I worked on putting it all together in her new playroom (just the TV room revamped) after she went to bed. And like I see on the D.I.Y. shows I was up until 1 in the morning trying to complete it so when she awakened, it would be all done and ready her!
Here is a slideshow of the completed room.
Ultimately, aside from making my little girl happy, I was once again reminded that I really can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
